My father passed with property both here and in Australia. I had no idea how to begin. Ahmad Kamal was patient in explaining what would need to happen in each jurisdiction — and he didn't give me false hope about how quickly things would move. The matter took about fourteen months, but I was kept informed throughout. I knew what was happening and what was still pending.

We came to Pusaka Counsel to set up a trust for our three children. The consultation was thorough — they asked questions I hadn't thought about, and the answers shaped what ended up in the deed. The draft was provided in sections, which helped us read and understand each part rather than facing the whole document at once. The fee was clear from the beginning, which I appreciated.

I wanted a will in place but also had some specific wishes about how certain assets should be handled for my daughter's future. They took time to understand what I actually wanted, not just what a standard form would cover. The process was slower than I expected initially, but I understand now why — they were being careful. I'm glad they were.

Our family estate involved property in three countries. I had gone to two other firms first who either declined the matter or gave me vague timelines that came and went. Pusaka Counsel was direct about what each jurisdiction would require and why the process would take the time it did. The coordination with the UK solicitors was handled well — I didn't have to manage both relationships myself.

The trust deed they prepared for us covers both our children and, if needed, our grandchildren. Nurul Raziqin explained the provisions in a way that made sense — not just reading out the legal language, but explaining what each clause does in practice. I went in expecting a standard product and came away with something tailored to our family. Worth noting that it took longer than a simple will would — about eight weeks — but that was appropriate given the scope.

I came in knowing very little about estate planning. I own a business, some property, and have investments in Singapore. They walked me through what needed to be addressed and prepared a comprehensive plan. What I valued most was that at each stage they asked whether I had questions before moving forward. I never felt rushed to sign anything I hadn't fully read.

Three Matters in Detail
Case Study · PC/2024/031 — Estate Plan Drafting
The Situation
A retired businessman in his 70s with assets including commercial property, a family home, unit trust holdings, and EPF savings. He had four children from two marriages, and specific views about how different parts of the estate should pass.
Our Approach
Two initial consultations to map the full estate picture. A will addressing the property and investments, a discretionary trust for the EPF nomination, and a letter of wishes to guide the executor on contested matters. Drafts reviewed over three stages.
Outcome
Completed estate plan executed and registered. Timeline: seven weeks from initial consultation. The client's specific wishes regarding different beneficiaries were clearly expressed in the documents — not left to interpretation. Fee: RM 4,500.
"I had left this too long. At least it is now in order and my children will know what I intended."
Case Study · PC/2023/017 — Probate with Foreign Assets
The Situation
A deceased engineer had worked in both Malaysia and Hong Kong over his career. His estate included a Malaysian property, a current account in Hong Kong, and a portfolio of shares held by a Hong Kong brokerage. He died intestate (without a will).
Our Approach
Letters of Administration obtained in Malaysia. Coordination with Hong Kong solicitors to obtain a resealing of the Malaysian grant. Regular written updates to the two siblings acting as administrators, who were managing the matter from different cities.
Outcome
Full estate administered and distributed over 16 months. The Hong Kong assets required additional steps given the intestacy, but all assets were ultimately repatriated. The administrators were informed at each stage without needing to chase for updates.
"The process was longer than we hoped, but we always knew where things stood. That made it manageable."
Case Study · PC/2024/044 — Trust Establishment
The Situation
A couple in their 50s with one adult child and one child with a long-term condition requiring ongoing care. They wanted to provide for both children but needed the arrangements for the second child to continue operating after both parents were gone.
Our Approach
A discretionary trust established with the couple's siblings as trustees and a professional trustee as backstop. Detailed trust deed provisions tailored to the second child's care needs. Written operational guide prepared for the trustees explaining their duties in plain language.
Outcome
Trust established and executed within nine weeks. The couple have ongoing peace of mind that arrangements are in place for both children. The operational guide was reviewed and confirmed by the nominated trustees before execution. Fee: RM 2,500.
"This was the one thing we had been putting off for years. Now it is done, and we understand exactly what we have put in place."
